Stressing over upcoming exams or your never-ending workload? Summer holidays are only a few months away, and what better way to beat the stress by starting to plan your holiday out! If you’re planning on visiting Sri Lanka during your vacation, here are some of the must-visit spots and experiences that you should not miss out on! Walk Down Galle Fort Galle Fort is the UNESCO World Heritage Site that was built by the Portuguese and fortified by the Dutch and the British. Enjoy a stroll down the vibrant cobblestoned alleys of the colonial fort and observe the European influences on architectural sites which seamlessly blend with local lifestyles. There are many boutique shops and many restaurants all around the fort. I would recommend visiting AQUA Forte for lunch or dinner, to enjoy an intimate and memorable authentic Italian fine dining experience. I am a huge fan of wine and pasta, which is why AQUA Forte is one of my favourite restaurants. They have an exquisite range of Italian wines which elevates the flavours of their delicious pasta dishes. If you’re interested in learning about the history of the Galle Fort, make sure to visit The Galle National Museum and The National Maritime Museum, to admire many archaeological and anthropological artifacts. Another must-visit spot is the Dutch Reformed Church also known as the Groote Kerk which won the UNESCO Asia Pacific Heritage for restoration. The church’s grandiose beauty is a vision to behold! Tip: Get yourself a cup of Gelato to beat the heat and make sure to enjoy the sunset by the Galle Lighthouse! Surf the Perfect Wave The teardrop shaped island, Sri Lanka has been blessed with some of the most beautiful beaches in the world, which makes it the perfect paradise for surfers everywhere! Some of the best beaches for surfing in Sri Lanka are in the Eastern province and Southern province. The Eastern province gets constant swell, specially around Arugam Bay between May and October. There are beaches suitable for all levels of surfers such as Arugam Bay, Elephant Rock and Okanda. However, if you’re more of an experienced surfer who is looking for more of a challenge then make sure to visit Pottuvil. If you’re looking to surf in the Southern province of Sri Lanka, then make sure to stay at Ahangama, home to some of the best surf schools and there are plenty of great surf spots nearby. I would recommend staying at Solas Surf, a surf and yoga retreat at Kabalana Beach, Ahangama. This is perfect for anyone who is thinking of learning how to surf or even for experienced surfers. Their 7-day surf packages provide surfing lessons, yoga sessions and they even provide all the equipment that you would need. Visit the Ancient Rock Fortress; Sigiriya Sigiriya is one of Sri Lanka’s most iconic and recognizable landmarks that attracts many tourists every year. There is so much rich history and plenty of stories behind this UNESCO World Heritage site, and the view from the top is spectacular. The ancient architecture is one of the finest examples in the world, you would be able to witness the fortified moats and lush water gardens with advanced irrigation systems. If you’re visiting Sigiriya make sure to book your stay at Jetwing Vil Uyana, located 17 minutes away from the Sigiriya Rock. The beautiful property includes 36 dwellings that are luxurious and each one offers scenic views. The hotel offers tours and curated experiences around the city of Sigiriya, Anuradhapura, Polonnaruwa and even Kandy. Explore Tea Country Take the train when you visit upcountry to enjoy the scenic views of tea hills and breathe in the fresh air. If you’re a fan of hiking, then Hatton is one place you should visit in Sri Lanka! The trails take you through tea gardens, tranquil forests, streams and mini waterfalls. This is the perfect place for any nature lover, to experience breathtaking views, exotic flora and rare birdlife. While you’re visiting Hatton, make sure to stay at Ceylon Tea Trails by Resplendent Ceylon, this property compromises of restored historic tea planter residences offering panoramic views of the Ceylon tea region. They also offer many curated experiences based on your needs, if you’re looking for some adventure there is White Water Rafting and Kayaking. If you’re looking for a truly unique Ceylon experience, go for a private tea tasting or on a guided tour of the Dunkeld Tea Factory, to enjoy Dilmah Ceylon Tea. These were some of my favourite must-visit spots in Sri Lanka!
